Helderberg Farm offers a traditional South African charm as well as a family friendly atmosphere. We are the sixth generation of Hendrikz/Obermeyer family to have lived and farmed in the unique Boland Winelands.
We are deliberately steering clear of the run of the mill commercialism on this farm. Wine grapes of the highest quality are produced on this farm with its exceptional terroir. We are situated at the foot of the Helderberg Mountain. Interestingly, the name “Helderberg” translates into Clear Mountain. The mountain indicates the expected weather patterns of the upcoming days in that if there are clouds gathering around the top, rain can be expected. Clear skies, on the other hand, result in beautiful sunny days to come. Visitors can expect to encounter indigenous wildlife on the farm. The fish eagle’s cry is regularly heard, blue crane pass over head on their way to the Overberg and cape clawless otters leave their characteristic prints in the mud. You may even come across the tracks of the cape leopard. Visiting birdwatchers have sighted over 100 different species of bird. The farm is home to one of the biggest Mountain Candlewood trees in South Africa. Klaas Vechtman, the original owner of the farm in 1692, planted trees which remain to this day. Visitors can be assured of having a surreal experience in the woodlands on the mountain side.
Visible from the hiking trail (all permits available at the Tea Garden) is a panoramic view encompassing the Cape Peninsula, False Bay, Table Bay and Table Mountain. On a clear day, hikers can even see Robben Island which is approximately 65km away. The Boland Winelands stretches to your right as far as the eye can see. The total distance of the Helderberg Farm hiking trail is approximately 20km, peaking at 1136m above sea level. This lengthy hike is rewarded by majestic views. The location of the farm renders it free of most of the prevailing winds of summer and even winter, making this a very sheltered spot to enjoy when the howling Southeasterly wind chases most people off the beaches. That might explain the presence of some Stone-age relics. Stocked mainly with produce from the farm, the Tea Garden is the next stop with Ruda’s chocolate cake and cheesecake (limited stock) as the highlight. Visitors can enjoy a great view from the Tea Garden and kiddies’ playground which are situated between some well-established willow and oak trees. Fresh strawberries, grown bio-friendly on the farm, are served in season and are available for visitors to handpick between October and December (strawberry picking closed on Sundays).
Helderberg Farm offers a variety of picnic and braai sites (maximum 10 people per spot), as well as private venues which can cater for up to 200 people. Bookings are essential. Rustic Farm Weddings as well as live entertainment are both popular attractions of the Forest. The use of music is prohibited (only evening functions are allowed with restricted volume and regulations) in order to maintain an appropriate ambiance. Being a child-friendly location, we are very popular for kiddies’ parties. Come winter time, a cozy fireplace in Die Stal will make your visit an enjoyable one.
